Murder victim's family wants execution to proceed

LAWRENCEVILLE - Family members of Doug Gissendaner have issued a statement in the on again/off again execution of the woman who plotted his murder - his wife Kelly Gissendaner - the only woman on Georgia's death row.

A statement was released through the Gwinnett County District Attorney's Office Wednesday, calling for justice for Doug Gissendaner.

"Doug is the true victim of this premeditated and heinous crime," the statement said. "We, along with our friends and supporters and our faith, will continue fighting for Doug until he gets the justice he deserves no matter how long it takes." The statement was signed "The Family of Douglas Morgan Gissendaner."

The statement appeared in several Atlanta-area media outlets, including the Gwinnett Daily Post and CBS 46.

Kelly Gissendar initially was supposed to be executed on February 25, but the threat of winter weather postponed the death. The second execution date, March 2, was scrapped after prison officials noticed a cloudiness in the lethal injection drug.

Since then, the state has halted all executions for a review of the drugs.
