A Flowery Branch woman was killed in a Thursday-morning crash on McEver Road near Bell Drive, according to information released by the Georgia State Patrol.

The victim was identified as Lorraine Helene Cook, 76.

SFC David A. Rathel, Post Commander of Georgia State Patrol Post 6 in Gainesville, said in an email statement Cook was traveling southbound on McEver Road in a Nissan Sentra when an oncoming van traveled into her lane and struck her head-on. After the van struck Cook's vehicle, it rotated in the roadway and hit a Nissan Frontier.

The driver of the van that hit Cook's car was identified as Magdaleno Montoyo Gomez, 48, of Cumming.

Both Cook and Gomez were taken to Northeast Georgia Medical Center. Cook died from her injuries at the hospital. Gomez was treated for minor injuries and released. The driver of the Nissan Frontier was not injured.

Rathel said Gomez faces charges in connection with the crash. He said drugs and alcohol are not suspected factors in the incident.

Rathel said the collision was reported just after 9:30 a.m. on Thursday, Dec. 30.
