GAINESVILLE - This will be the final year for the annual Trick or Treat on the Square in downtown Gainesville.

City officials say they are trying to encourage participants to attend Trick or Treat on the Trail, the Halloween event at the Midtown Greenway.

"We will have signs up around town to let everyone know for next year," said city spokeswoman Catiel Felts.

But this year, trick-or-treaters will get a "double treat."

Trick or Treat on the Square will be held Halloween afternoon, Friday, Oct. 31, from 3:00-5:00. The costume contest will be at 4:30.

Trick or Treat on the Trail, however, will be held this coming Saturday, Oct. 25, from 3:00-5:00.

The Midtown Greenway is located on Grove Street behind the Gainesville Justice Center/Public Safety Building on John Morrow Parkway.

It will include "whimsical" house fronts lining the trail, designed to give youngsters the feeling of going door-to-door. The event is free and the city promises "lots of candy," a petting zoo, costume contest and games.

Participants are encouraged to bring a canned food item for the Georgia Mountain Food Bank.
