9-year-old girl shot in Barrow County

WINDER - Barrow County authorities are investigating the shooting of a nine-year-old girl Monday evening.

According to a post on the county Sheriff's Office Facebook page, deputies were called to the scene at Highway 82 and Giles Road Monday afternoon in response to 9-1-1 calls referencing a child who was suffering from a gunshot wound.

The Facebook post also said that the roadway was shut down for a short time while a medical helicopter was brought to the scene. The victim's condition at the time of this medical transport was not disclosed.

Deputies told WSB-TV in Atlanta that the shooting apparently occurred when a gun being cleaned by an unnamed individual accidentally discharged. The unidentified man was said to be the boyfriend of the girl's mother.

WSB reports that the shooter and girl's mother, as well as two other children who were home at the time of the shooting, are being questioned by authorities. No charges have been filed at this time.
