Wintry mix expected in mountains; black ice alert for Gainesville, other areas

By Ken Stanford Contributing Editor
PEACHTREE CITY - A Winter Weather Advisory has been issued for several north Georgia counties for today where a mixture of rain, sleet, and freezing rain is likely.

The Gainesville area is not included but there is the potential for black ice around the city overnight tonight.

Temperatures, which remained in the mid-60s overnight last night in most of north Georgia, have been gradually falling since early this morning and are expected to continue to do so all day and into the night.

Much of the South - including north Georgia - was forecast to see temperatures drop 30 to 45 degrees in a 24-hour period.

Some locations may see their coldest temperatures ever recorded so late in the season, including Nashville, Tennessee, and Louisville, Kentucky, where temperatures could drop into the single digits. On Thursday morning, parts of Kentucky saw more than 20 inches of snowfall overnight - and it was still coming down.

In Gainesville, the high at Lee Gilmer Memorial Airport yesterday was 75. That was at 3:00. By 3:00 this after, the temperature is expected to be in the mid-40s with wind chills in the mid-20s.

The National Weather Service (NWS) says the wintry mix is expected in places such as Rome, Dalton, Dahlonega, Cleveland and Blairsville.

Further south, forecasters say black ice could form on streets and highways in metro Atlanta, Gainesville and Athens tonight and tomorrow morning, and as far south as the LaGrange and Covington areas.
