GMRC plans aerial mapping of NE Ga.

GAINESVILLE - The Georgia Mountains Regional Commission is planning to use aerial photography and LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) to map 10 mountain counties and two cities in the region.

That according to Faith Bryan, who leads the project for the GMRC.

Counties that will be mapped in North Georgia include Hall, Dawson, Forsyth, Banks, Habersham, Union, Towns, Stephens, and Hart.

The cities of Cleveland and Helen will be mapped as well; Jackson and Barrow Counties too, but they are not within the GMRC's boundaries.

The flyovers are already underway, and should continue into February, wrapping up no later than March 7.

"We want the (mapping) to take place during prime leaf-off conditions so that there will not be any leaves on the trees to block features on the ground such as fire hydrants, manholes, storm water, roads, buildings or other objects that might be useful for...county/city governments," said Bryan in an email.

Tax assessors and other county officials can use these maps for parcel information, and 911 centers can use them to help dispatch emergency calls, among other various uses.

The mapping will also provide data on elevation and countour of the land, thanks to the LiDAR.

The portion being conducted in North Georgia is part of a larger project -- spanning 22 counties plus the city of Atlanta, covering more than 7,000 square miles -- that combines the efforts of five regional commissions.

"Which is unprecedented," said Bryan.

The final products will be delivered to the participating governments in October.
