Body found in Lanier identified as homeless man

CUMMING - A man found drowned in Lake Lanier Monday has been identified as 46-year-old Chad Frank Lovett, a homeless man who apparently had been living in a tent at Mary Alice Park in Forsyth County.

Lovett's body was identified through fingerprints, according to Forsyth County Sheriff's Deputy Doug Rainwater.

Rainwater said the State Crime Lab determined that Lovett had been in the lake for more than a week. His body was discovered around noon Monday by visitors to the park.

An acquaintance told investigators that Lovett owned a kayak and would often use the kayak on the lake. "We are not able to locate the kayak, so there's a strong possibility that one evening, or during the day, that he was out on the kayak and for whatever reason, went into the water and never came back up," said Rainwater.

Rainwater said Lovett is originally from Kansas City, Kansas where his mother and sister still live, and had relatives in the Atlanta area. Rainwater said no one reported Lovett missing. "We do not know how long he has actually been in Forsyth County, living in a tent at Mary Alice Park yet, but we're still trying to piece all this together."

The Forsyth County Sheriff's Office Criminal Investigations Section continues to investigate the death.
