LCCA culinary arts students cook for Boys and Girls Club

By Staff
OAKWOOD - Before leaving for their own Thanksgiving break, Lanier Charter Career Academy's (LCCA) Culinary Arts students prepared a Thanksgiving meal for the Boys and Girls Club of Gainesville, using produce and other food products donated by area businesses.

Drew Studivant, a culinary student and senior at LCCA said, "This is special. It allows us to learn to help the community and to be a better person."

Another LCCA culinary student, Jordan Carr stated, "I feel good to help the community to make it a better place. It is great to help the Boys and Girls Club during the holidays."

LCCA is in its fifth year of operation. While most known for the student-operated businesses at The Oaks, including the Corner Café and the Reflections Salon and Spa, many of LCCA's programs emphasize the importance of living and being in community with one another.

"Our school is very much real America," says Dr. Cindy Blakley, principal of LCCA.

"While our students and staff come from all walks of life, the common thread is that we all live within the larger Hall County area. If we learn to consider others' needs before our own, we become interdependent and strengthen our entire community. The
partnership between our culinary program and the Boys and Girls Club is just one example of how our students are learning to become active, responsible citizens."

Culinary instructor Terry Haymond initiated the partnership three years ago.

"Working with the Boys and Girls Club has been a great opportunity for our students to learn how to give back," said Haymond.

"Preparing part of the Thanksgiving meal is not about the food. It's about the service. Students can use this opportunity to develop as community members."
