Braselton man sentenced to 20 years in high-speed chase case

GAINESVILLE - A Braselton man was sentenced to 15 years behind bars Thursday in a May 2013 case that involved a high-speed chase in Hall and Gwinnett counties.<br /> <br /> 35-year-old William Jason McClure was convicted by a Hall County Jury Thursday and sentenced by Hall County Superior Court Judge Bonnie Oliver, according to Hall County District Attorney Lee Darragh.<br /> <br /> The verdict was on three counts of aggravated assault on a peace officer, one count of criminal damage to property in the second degree, one count of felony obstruction of an officer, one count of felony fleeing and attempting to elude and one count of aggressive driving.<br /> <br /> McClure's charges stemmed from an attempted traffic stop by the Georgia State Patrol. McClure fled from troopers, leading them on a chase through the two counties, with speeds in excess of 100 mph, according to Darragh. <br /> <br /> "The aggravated assault charges arose after the defendant was deliberately striking and ramming the officers' vehicles," said Darragh. Darragh said McClure also physically hit a Gwinnett County Sheriff's Deputy after his vehicle was stopped.<br /> <br /> McClure's 20 year sentence also includes five years probation. <br /> <br /> It took the jury an hour to reach its verdict in the three-day trial.
