Volleyball: East Hall continues historic playoff run

GAINESVILLE -- It continues to be a record-setting season for the East Hall girls volleyball team.<br /> <br /> The Lady Vikings, fresh off their first-ever playoff series win last week, advanced to their first-ever Elite 8 after sweeping Kendrick 25-14, 25-12, 25-21 at home Tuesday night.<br /> <br /> East Hall coach Ted Deppe said it has been a fun ride so far.<br /> <br /> "Our goal was to win region and we did that. Then we wanted to get our first playoff win and we did that. Now, to get to the Elite 8 is just amazing," Deppe said. "We don't have any real superstars but they just play so well together. It's been fun to watch them grow and develop as players and a team."<br /> <br /> East Hall (44-14) will now wait to see who it faces on saturday in the Elite 8 round. The brackets are reseeded by strength. Blessed Trinity, Westminster, Sonoraville, Savannah Arts, Oconee County, Lakeview-Fort Oglethorpe, and Rockmart also advanced to the Elite 8. The Championship bracket will be released on Wednesday.<br /> <br /> "Obviously Blessed Trinity and Westminster are the top two teams but what is nice this year is that four teams -- us, Rockmart, Savannah Arts, and LFO -- are all making it for the first time. It should be an interesting tournament, Deppe said. <br /> <br /> Against Kendrick, East Hall was paced by Allyson Segars who had 14 points on serve with to go with 15 kills and nine digs. Cassida Shockley had 13 points on serve with two aces, three kills, six digs and 33 assists, and Minette Maldonado had 11 kills and 10 digs for the Lady Vikings.<br /> <br /> Ashleigh Burnett had five kills, two assists, and eight digs, Emily Roberts had seven kills and four blocks, and Savannah Lindsey had 19 digs for East Hall. <br /> <br /> In other action for area teams on Tuesday, North Gwinnett swept Douglas County in the Class AAAAAA second round. North Hall swept Locus Grove and Buford swept Eagles Landing in Class AAAA to advance to the Elite 8.
