Corps: Lanier water level is 'exactly where it's supposed to be this time of year'

By Ken Stanford Contributing Editor
BUFORD - As September came to a close Tuesday, the level of Lake Lanier dipped below 1068 for the first time in 18 months but a spokeswoman for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers says there is nothing to worry about.

The lake level Tuesday was 1067.99; the last time it was that low was April 12, 2013. Wednesday, the lake level was 1067.95.

"It's exactly where it's supposed to be this time of the year," said Lisa Parker, Deputy Public Affairs Officer with the Corps' Mobile, Ala., office.

The current levels mean the lake is now three feet below summer full pool (1071) and two feet below winter full pool (1070). At the start of summer, the lake was nearly three feet higher than it is now.

"At this time of year, it's typical for it to begin to descend due to dryer conditions and just lack of rain," said Parker.

In early September, Parker said a rumor that the Corps was planning large releases from Lanier to help keep barges moving in the river basin in south Georgia was just that - a rumor.
