UGA on pace for record enrollment

By The Associated Press
ATHENS, Ga. (AP) -- The University of Georgia is on pace for a record enrollment this fall.

Final numbers are not yet in, but the preliminary numbers could eclipse last year's final fall semester enrollment of 34,536 and the 2009 record enrollment of 34,885, officials said.

As of Sept. 9, the university's combined graduate, professional and undergraduate enrollment was 34,988, The Athens Banner-Herald reported (bit.ly/1v0bZeW).

The preliminary numbers typically fluctuates before final figures are in and they generally rise.

"That's generally the pattern," said Tom Jackson, UGA vice president for public affairs.

In past years, the number has climbed as students who have missed tuition payments make arrangements to remain enrolled, UGA Registrar Jan Hathcote said.

Last year at this point, UGA's enrollment was 34,268 before reaching the final fall semester total of 34,536, according to figures from the state Board of Regents.

This year's enrollment figure includes students at the main campus in Athens plus more than 1,000 students on UGA campuses in Tifton, Griffin, Lawrenceville and Atlanta. But this year's growth was largely on the Athens campus, where enrollment increased from 33,469 at this time last year to 33,966 as of Sept. 9.
