Lula Council votes to fix the caboose

By Jerry Gunn Reporter
LULA - Lula's historic railroad caboose needs repairs and City Council approved funding for it Monday night. Mayor Milton Turner said the caboose came to town back in the 1980's and symbolizes the town's heritage.

"The decision was made to investigate the repainting and refurbishing of the exterior of the caboose," Turner said. "Council has approved a cost not to exceed $5,000."

Mayor Pro Tem Vicky Chambers said the caboose, located in the middle of town, is not a good reflection on the city right now and needs restoration.

WAITING ON THE NUMBERS

Council learned it must wait another month before listing projects funded by a 7th Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax. Mayor Turner said the county could be ready to decide what they want out of SPLOST (7) at an October 15th administrators meeting.

"We're waiting for the county to come up with their numbers on tier (2) projects," Turner said. "We're waiting to see the dollar amounts so we can set our projects and put it together for the public."

Turner said the county may set a March,2015 referendum date on SPLOST (7); he expects Lula would use most of its special sales tax funding to resurface streets.

"It's all based on population, there is no negotiation as far as how much each municipality gets," Turner added. "After the tier two projects are taken out, we'll know how much money is projected for each city to have."

SPLOST (7) if passed by the voters could generate an estimated $158-million.
