Two cars damaged after rocks thrown off 985 overpass

GAINESVILLE - Two cars were damaged, but no one was injured, earlier this morning after heavy rocks were dropped from an overpass on Interstate 985.

"Around 1:30 a.m., police responded to calls from a driver on Interstate 985," said Gainesville Police Corporal Kevin Holbrook. "That driver stated that they were travelling on 985, just under the Athens Street Overpass, when a rock was tossed on their vehicle."

Holbrook said police searched the area but didn't find any suspects. Half an hour later, they receive a similar call from another driver.

"We did have officers in the area due to the previous call," said Holbrook. "Those officers were able to find a few individuals who they've ID'd to be suspects."

Holbrook says police believe four young men are responsible for the damage, however, no arrests have been made. He said police did not catch the suspects throwing the rocks and the investigation is ongoing.

While neither driver was injured, one car was heavily damaged, and the other was moderately damaged.

"This could have been a very, very tragic situation," Holbrook said. "After looking at one of the vehicles, it appeared as though the roof of the vehicle had been taken off similar to [that] of a can in a can opener."

Holbrook said depending on the outcome of the investigation, the culprits could face criminal damage or aggravated assault charges.
