Dueling ethics complaints filed in Ga. gov race

By The Associated Press
ATLANTA (AP) -- A former state lawmaker has filed an ethics complaint against Democrat Jason Carter, whose campaign manager has since filed similar complaints against Gov. Nathan Deal.

A July 17 complaint by former state Sen. John Douglas alleges Carter, a state senator from Atlanta, violated state law by sending fundraiser invitations during the legislative session. Carter is challenging Deal, who is up for re-election in November.

Carter campaign manager Matt McGrath says the fundraiser was for the state party and happened after the session was over. McGrath filed two complaints Friday against Deal for attending a fundraiser hosted by the Republican Governors' Association and for sending out invitations to his annual fundraiser during the session.

Deal campaign spokeswoman Jennifer Talaber said the complaints against the governor were "a desperate attempt to deflect."
