GAINESVILLE - Gainesville Police and the Department of Natural Resources are investigating the apparent drowning of a Gainesville man in Lake Lanier.

Gainesville Police Cpl. Kevin Holbrook said authorities were called to the boat docks at the Chattahoochee Country Club around 10 p.m. Thursday. Holbrook said when police arrived, William James Carswell, 51, was already on the boat dock.

"Gainesville police units were the first on the scene," said Holbrook. "They immediately began life-saving procedures. Shortly after that, medical personnel arrived and took over the situation."

Holbrook said Carswell was taken to Northeast Georgia Medical Center where he died Friday morning.

Holbrook said investigators are not sure how Carswell fell into the lake or how he was removed from the water. He said Gainesville police and DNR law enforcement continue their investigation.
