National Day of Prayer returns next week to Gainesville Square

By Austin Eller News Director

A local celebration of the 73rd Annual National Day of Prayer will soon return to the Gainesville Square.

The Prayer on the Square event will take place Thursday, May 2, at noon on the Gainesville Square.

The event is organized annually by Brandy Sandoval and Maxine Wagner with Hall County Prayer.

"We consider it a mandate from the lord to keep prayer alive in our nation, and to keep prayer alive in our community," Sandoval said in an interview with AccessWDUN.

Attendees will pray over eight topics that impact the U.S. at the event. These topics include the church, government, family, education, business, military, media and life.

A National Day of Prayer Breakfast will be held prior to the Prayer on the Square event. The breakfast will run from 6:30 a.m. until 8:15 a.m. at the Gainesville Civic Center on Green Street. Trey Lewis, CEO of Good Landing Recovery in Dacula, will speak at the event.

"We are very excited to have him because he is the number one in Georgia, and right at the top of the nation for drug and alcohol rehab," Sandoval said.

Tickets for the breakfast will be available at the door for $20.

Wagner said the National Day of Prayer has historical ties dating back before the founding of the United States.

"The Continental Congress in 1775 proclaimed setting aside a day of prayer, then in 1952 under President Truman, Congress established an annual Day of Prayer," Wagner said. "Then in 1988, under President Reagan, the law was amended and he designated the National Day of Prayer as the first Thursday of May."
