Indoor Track: Area schools place in RMA invitational

GAINESVILLE — The Riverside Military Academy indoor track team was second-best in the 22-school Last Chance Invitational at the John L. Beaver Field House Saturday.

The Gainesville girls track team was the highest placing area girls team, finishing fourth. Rome High School boys and girls teams swept the team titles.

The Eagles captured first in boys 800 meters, 4X200 and 4X400-meter relay events and the 55-meter high hurdles.

Shad Dabney, Jermaine Harris, Aveni Miguel and Cooper Lindsay used their speed to edge Rome in the 4 X 200 relay, 1:39.71 – 1:41.52 and beat Centennial, 3:55.67 – 3:59.20 in the 4 X 400 relay.

Harris also captured the boys 400-meter dash title, beating Alpharetta's Joshua Flynn, 54.26 - 54.29, Philemon Nwosu won the 55m high hurdles running 7.9 seconds, and Lindsey grabbed the best time in the 800-meter event.

Banks County's Griffin Stephens sprinted to a second-place medal in the 300-meter event.

In the boys' field events, Gainesville's Makius Scott was fourth in the shot put. Juan Cavazos turned in a first-place performance for Gainesville in the high jump, while Cherokee Bluff's John Bazemore was second and East Hall's Caleb Stuart was fourth. Cavazo's finished second in the long jump.

Ian Mallard led the Red Elephants in the pole vault event, finished second.

For the girls, Gainesville's Ashley Thompson beat her teammate Ashley Sosa to win the 3,000-meter event. It was the only win on the girls' side for an area team. Bluff's Sierra Wainer was third. 

Cherokee Bluff's 4 X 400 relay team of Daysha Mills, Adison Myers, Wainer and Meghan Butler beat Gainesville for second place. Wainer also finished fourth in the 1,500-meter run.  

Myers led the Lady Bears finishing third in the 800-meter finals.
